Now I’d like to tell about the letter Ь.
There is an important distinction in Russian between hard and soft consonants.
There is one in English as well. Compare:
bad and big
madam and miss
ten and teen
The first word has a hard consonant and the second has a soft consonant.
In Russian the letter Ь marks soft consonants.
So, for example, TЬ must be pronounced as [t] in teen.
I can see you mind boiling! Now it’s time for some examples.
Listen to the examples and repeat!
мАть "mother" – мАт “bad words”
брАть “take” – брАт “brother”
мЕсть “vengeance” – мЕсто “place”
пусть “let” – пусто “empty”
Now you can see how important it is not to confuse hard and soft consonants
because that can provoke misunderstanding!
Now try to read yourself!
Compare to the correct pronunciation!
