Lesson 6 - getting acquainted

Now we’ll learn how to get acquainted with new people in Russian.

It depends on the situation:

1.Formal situation

Exercise 1

Listen and repeat!

- ЗдрАвствуйте!
МенЯ зовУт Юлия Игоревна.
- Очень приЯтно!
МенЯ зовУт Ольга ПетрОвна.

(- Hello!
Me name is Yulia Igorevna.
- Nice to meet you.
My name is Olga Petrovna.)

A small note: Russian names have patronims (for example, Игоревна).
They are used to show respect to the person you speak to.

2.Informal situation

Exercise 2

Listen and repeat!

-ПривЕт! Я – Юля.
-Очень приЯтно! Я - Оля.

(- Hi! I’m Julia.
- Nice to meet you! I’m Olga.)

Imagine the way you will present yourself when you are in Russia!

Phonetic part

You’ve already learned that Ь makes the consonant before it soft
(if you don’t remember that go back to the lesson 4).
But there are also some vowels
that makes the previous consonant soft.
Let’s call them "soft vowels":

Е е
Ё ё
И и
Ю ю
Я я

Exercise 3

Listen and repeat!

мя – ма
ме – мэ
ми – мы
мю – му

тя – та
те – тэ
ти – ты
тю – ту

Some of these syllables are real words:
мы – “we”
му – “the sound the cow makes”
ты – “you”

Exercise 4

Now try to pronounce yourself!

дя – да
де – дэ
ди – ды
дю – ду

ря – ра
ре – рэ
ри – ры
рю – ру

Listen to the correct pronunciation!

In order not to make you think that you’re doing nonsense
try to pronounce the words with the sounds you’ve studied!

Exercise 5

мЯсо
мЕсто
тЕло
тИхо
дЯдя
дЕд
рекА
рукА
рЯженка
